Any of these are worth a call to a certified arborist: Leaves yellowing, browning, or dropping outside of the normal fall season. Canopy that seems thinner or less dense than previous years. Bark cracking, peeling, or showing unusual discoloration. Mushrooms, conks, or other fungal growth at the base or on the trunk. Unusual insect activity — holes in bark, sawdust-like frass, wilting sections. Sections of the tree that are not leafing out while the rest of the tree is. Roots that look damaged, exposed, or surrounded by standing water. A tree that just generally seems off compared to recent years, even if you cannot pinpoint why. These signs do not always mean the tree is dying. They mean something is happening, and the sooner a trained arborist looks at it, the more options you have.

Tree diagnosis is not a quick look and a guess. Our arborists work through a structured evaluation that covers every relevant factor. We look at the foliage — color, texture, pattern of discoloration, early drop, or failure to leaf out. We examine the bark for signs of pest activity, disease lesions, cankers, or decay. We assess the root zone for soil compaction, grade changes, drainage problems, and physical root damage. We look at the tree's recent history — construction nearby, drought, past pruning, chemical exposure — because what is happening now often connects to something that happened a year or two ago. Once we have a clear picture, we give you a diagnosis and a set of options with honest projections for each one. We do not recommend treatment if treatment is unlikely to work. We do not recommend removal without a legitimate reason for it.

The Piedmont Triad has a handful of recurring threats that homeowners with mature trees should know about. Emerald Ash Borer has been established in North Carolina for several years and continues to spread. It kills ash trees — and ash trees are extremely common in Greensboro neighborhoods. Early detection and trunk injection treatment can save a tree that would otherwise be a removal job within two to three years. Oak wilt is a fungal disease that moves through root grafts and through insect vectors. It is particularly aggressive in red oaks, which can die within weeks of infection. Pruning oaks at the wrong time of year significantly increases exposure risk. Hemlock woolly adelgid affects Eastern hemlocks and has devastated hemlock populations across the Southeast. Insecticide treatments can protect hemlocks that have not yet been severely impacted. Anthracnose affects dogwoods, sycamores, and other common landscape trees and causes significant leaf and twig dieback that is often mistaken for drought stress. Our arborists identify these conditions accurately before recommending any treatment, and we use current, research-backed protocols for everything we apply.

Urban and suburban soils are not forest soils. They are compacted, often nutrient-depleted, and frequently altered by construction, grading, and years of lawn maintenance practices that prioritize grass over trees. Most mature trees in residential landscapes are doing their best in soil conditions that are working against them. Deep root fertilization delivers nutrients directly into the root zone under pressure, bypassing compacted surface soil and getting the right elements to where the tree can actually use them. Combined with soil testing to identify specific deficiencies, it is one of the most effective ways to improve a tree's vitality without any above-ground work. We also address soil compaction, drainage problems, and root zone management as part of a comprehensive PHC plan. These are not quick fixes — they are investments in a tree's long-term health.

This is the question most homeowners really want answered. The honest answer is: it depends on what is wrong, how far along it is, and whether the tree's structural integrity is still sound. Some trees that look terrible are actually very treatable. A tree in visible decline from soil problems or a pest infestation caught early can often be brought back. Some trees that look salvageable are not — because the decay or structural damage is too advanced, or because the disease has progressed past the point where treatment changes the outcome.
