Codominant stems, two main trunks growing from the same base and pushing apart, are one of the most common reasons homeowners are told a tree needs to be removed. They do not always. A properly installed cabling system can redistribute the load, reduce the risk of failure at the union, and extend the life of a tree that would otherwise be gone.

The same is true for long, heavy limbs growing over structures, and for trees with architecture that has developed unevenly over time. Cabling is not a patch. Done correctly by an arborist who understands the tree's structure, it is a real, long-term solution.

We install hardware-based systems where the tree's structure calls for it, and dynamic systems where flexibility is appropriate. We tell you what the system will do, what it will not do, and what you should watch for going forward.

We will also tell you honestly if cabling is not the right answer for a particular tree. If the structural problem is beyond what a support system can safely address, we will say that. We would rather give you an accurate picture than a false sense of security.

What Is Tree Cabling and When Does It Make Sense?
Tree cabling is the installation of a support system — typically steel cable or a synthetic line — between major stems or limbs to limit their independent movement and reduce the risk of structural failure. It does not fix the underlying weakness in a tree's architecture. What it does is manage the load so that weakness does not become a failure. It makes sense when a tree has codominant stems with a narrow or included bark union, when a long limb has grown beyond what its attachment point can reliably support, or when a tree has an overall lean that is within a manageable range but creates concern for what is beneath it. It does not make sense when the tree's structural integrity is fundamentally compromised — significant internal decay, root system failure, or a union so degraded that cable cannot change the outcome. We assess for that before recommending anything.
How a Structural Assessment Works Before Any Hardware Goes In
We do not install cabling without understanding the tree first. Our arborists evaluate the full structure — stem angles, union integrity, bark inclusion, crown weight distribution, root zone, and the site conditions around the tree. We identify the specific failure point the system needs to address and determine where hardware needs to be placed to actually reduce the load on that point. Height, angle, and connection points all affect how well the system works, and getting them wrong can create a false sense of security without meaningfully reducing risk. The assessment tells us whether cabling is the right solution, what type of system is appropriate, and where it needs to go. That information drives the installation, not the other way around.
Hardware Cabling vs. Dynamic Cabling — What Is the Difference?
Hardware-based cabling systems use steel cable attached to threaded eye-bolts installed in the tree. They are a rigid connection and are typically used where significant load reduction at a specific point is the priority. They are the traditional approach and remain the right choice for many situations. Dynamic cabling systems use synthetic webbing or rope that allows some movement between the stems while still limiting the range of motion that leads to failure. They are less invasive — no hardware is drilled into the tree — and in some cases are a better fit for younger or smaller-diameter trees. Our arborists assess which approach is appropriate for the specific tree and situation. In some cases, a combination of both is the right answer. We will explain the recommendation and the reasoning before any work begins.
Trees That Commonly Benefit from Cabling in the Greensboro Area
Several species common in Greensboro, Summerfield, and Oak Ridge landscapes are frequently good candidates for cabling. White oaks and willow oaks with codominant stems that have developed included bark unions over many years are among the most common situations we address. Large red maples with multiple leaders are another. Mature dogwoods with overextended lateral limbs, older American hollies with poor branch angles, and cherries or ornamental pears that have developed tight, clustered unions at the top of a single trunk all come up regularly in this area. How Long Does Tree Cabling Last? Monitoring and Maintenance
A properly installed hardware cabling system typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the hardware needs inspection and potentially replacement. Dynamic systems have varying lifespans depending on the materials and conditions. More important than the hardware lifespan is the fact that the tree keeps growing, and a system that was correctly sized for a tree at installation will need to be evaluated periodically to make sure it is still appropriate for the tree as it develops. We recommend having cabled trees assessed every two to three years. When we install a system, we explain what monitoring looks like going forward and what changes should prompt a call. A cabled tree is not a tree you install hardware on and stop thinking about. It is a tree you keep an eye on with the help of someone who knows what they are looking for.
